Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Fruit-in-Compote Decoration, Stamped "A.O. WHITTEMORE. / HAVANA. N.Y.," circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of an open-handled compote with pedestal base bearing six pieces of fruit and stylized scrolled trails. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. An approximately 6" crack on underside forming a 9" Y on right side of crock. A chip to one handle. A small in-the-firing iron ping to right side of crock, near base. H 11 5/8".
