Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and flared rim, brush-decorated with a flowering plant bearing two spotted tulips, three buds, and two leafy stems. Strong decoration with excellent color. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Rim chips. Wear to interior of rim. One handle with a shallow chip to one terminal and some wear to opposite terminal. Other handle with a shallow chip. Underside with two in-the-firing chips, measuring 1 1/4" and 3/4", including a 1 1/2" in-the-firing vertical line at base. A small in-the-firing ping to reverse. Very minor staining to reverse. H 13".
