One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Cobalt Rooster Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, wide, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a rooster standing on a stylized hill with shrubs. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Desirable decoration, rarely found on this form. A 3" hairline from rim on proper right side of crock's front. A minor in-the-firing iron ping to shoulder on front. A 1 1/8" x 1" in-the-firing lime ping to base on proper left side of crock at base. Two minor chips to interior of rim. A very minor glazed-over flake to top of rim. Some staining. Two long, in-the-firing horizontal surface lines directly below rim, which are glazed over and do not extend through to interior. Some scratches to Albany slip on interior base area. H 7 1/2" ; Diam. 10".
