Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Bird Decoration, Stamped "L. NORTON & Co / BENNINGTON," VT origin, circa 1823-1828, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout and ribbed handle, decorated with an incised and bluish-green-slip-highlighted design of a bird perched on a stylized leaf. Bird includes incised eye, wing outline, tail feathers, and dashed incising to wing and breast. Leaf with diagonal incised line decoration interspersed with short incised dashes. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Desirable one-gallon size. Relatively few examples of Norton stoneware with incised decoration are known. A 1 1/8" spout chip. Otherwise excellent condition. H 11 1/4".
