Extremely Rare Iron-Decorated Stoneware Water Cooler with Impressed Eagle-and-Cannon Decoration, Stamped "CHARLESTOWN," Frederick Carpenter Pottery, Charlestown, MA, circa 1812-1827, ovoid jar with circular opening at base, heavily-coggled shoulder, flared rim, and open loop handles, decorated with an impressed design of a spread-winged eagle perched on a cannon beside a stack of cannon balls. Dipped iron decoration to base of cooler. Includes wooden spigot. Exceptional form, featuring Carpenter's desirable eagle motif. Among the finest pieces bearing this stamp that we have offered. A small piece of adhered clay and small in-the-firing contact mark to front shoulder. Various surface crazing to exterior, not visible on interior. A tiny nick to interior of opening at base. Large in-the-firing flakes (contact marks) to underside along bottom edge. A rim chip adjacent to a glazed-over flake to exterior of rim. H 14 1/2".
