Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Bird Decoration, Stamped "C. BOYNTON / TROY," NY State origin, circa 1830, highly-ovoid jug with semi-squared spout and ribbed handle, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird with turned head, perched on a branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Desirable decoration and maker with excellent potting. Relatively few incised examples of Calvin Boynton stoneware are known. Although this jug is impressed "3," it appears to be closer to four gallons in capacity. Provenance: Ex-Robert Meltzer Collection- Crocker Farm, Inc., March 25, 2017, lot 219; Crocker Farm, Inc., March 23, 2019, lot 55. Excellent condition with a small chip to side of spout and some very minor, shallow in-the-firing chipping to edge of spout. Horizontal hairline to handle. A tiny base nick. A small piece of kiln furniture adhered to shoulder on reverse. H 16 1/4".
