Outstanding Salt-Glazed Stoneware Mug with Cobalt Goat and Barrel Decoration, Inscribed "Good luck," attributed to the William Macquoid Pottery, Manhattan, NY, circa 1870, barrel-form mug decorated with an extremely rare brushed design of a rearing goat facing a barrel along with the slogan, "Good luck." Incised and cobalt-highlighted banding to shoulder and base. Includes original pewter lid with eagle finial. This wonderful mug's decoration, inscription, and color lead to a firm attribution to the William Macquoid pottery of Little West 12th Street in Manhattan, New York. While we have offered a related jar and damaged mug featuring a man's bust raising a glass, both inscribed "Good luck," this mug and a related pitcher in this auction are the first pieces of Macquoid stoneware that we have offered depicting a goat and barrel, images associated with bock beer. This term comes from the Bavarian word, "Einbeck," pronounced "Ein Bock," meaning "billy goat." Scarce in form, this work showcases the Macquoid pottery's painterly brushwork and tendency towards unusual figural designs. Essentially as-made condition. Some blistered spots to surface. A 1 1/8" in-the-firing base chip. Other small in-the-firing base chips. H 8 1/2".
