Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "G.S. ANDREWS / NO 80 FURMAN ST BROOKLYN. N Y.," 1845-46, highly-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with an extravagant stylized slip-trailed design featuring curved strokes and spots flanked by floral elements, above a flourish underscored by graduated wavy lines. Impressed above with the rarely-seen, short-lived maker's mark of Brooklyn, New York pottery owner, George S. Andrews. The first example bearing this stamp that we have offered. A 1 3/4" flake to top of rim and other rim chips. Small chips and wear to interior of rim. A short in-the-firing line rear terminal of proper left handle. Minor flaking to reverse. A small flake to reverse end of proper right handle. A 2 1/2" in-the-firing fissure to underside, not visible on interior. Minor surface wear. H 10 3/4".
