Rare and Important One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Impressed Decoration, Stamped "COMMERAW'S / STONEWARE / CORLEARS / HOOK / N. YORK," Thomas W. Commeraw, Manhattan, NY origin, early 19th century, ovoid jug with footed base, finely-tooled neck, and semi-rounded mouth, decorated with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted drape-and-tassel motif resembling conjoined clamshells. Impressed below with the cobalt-highlighted maker's mark of Thomas Commeraw featuring rarely-seen five lines of stamping. While most of Commeraw's work bears partial stamping of his maker's mark, reading, for example, "COMMERAW'S / STONEWARE" or "CORLEARS / HOOK," this work features all known stamps the potter used to identify his ware during this period. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. One of only a small number of Commeraw pieces marked in this manner that we have ever offered. Provenance: A recently-surfaced example. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a 1" glazed-over, in-the-firing iron ping to proper right side of jug's front, a few other minor in-the-firing pings, and some salt residue to surface, all typical of pieces of this age and origin. H 12 1/2".
