Very Rare Salt-Glazed Stoneware Snake Jug with Iron and Copper Slip Decoration, attributed to Jacob Bachley, Anna or Texarkana Pottery, circa 1880, squat-shaped, ovoid jug with rounded spout, the surface heavily-incised to resemble tree bark, the handle modeled in the form of a twig with incised bark and forked lower terminal culminating in two large leaves, possibly molded from life using a magnolia. An applied snake curves around the twig, constricting the spout of the vessel. Rarely-seen copper highlights to leaves. Snake decorated with brown slip banding and copper accents. Provenance: Originally found in Texas; Crocker Farm, Inc., October 31, 2009, lot 121. Ex-George H. Meyer and Kay White Meyer Collection, acquired from David Good in 2010. Exceptional, as-made condition with some in-firing separations to one leaf. H 6 3/4".
