Rare Glazed Stoneware Face Jug, OH origin, late 19th or early 20th century, cylindrical jug with tubular spout, decorated with a hand-modeled and applied clay face featuring Bristol-slip eyes with cobalt pupils set within oval lids, nose with carved nostrils, mustache, chin, and large D-shaped ears. Applied textured clay forms hair, sideburns, eyebrows, mustache, and goatee. Surface covered in a reddish-brown Albany-slip-type glaze. A striking example of Ohio ceramic folk art, related to, and perhaps the work of, well-known Ohio face jug makers John and Maurice Dollings, this object boasts a prodigious size and immaculate condition. Provenance: Recently surfaced in Arizona. Excellent condition with two minor chips to hair, a small in-the-firing contact mark beside proper right eye, and in-the-firing glaze void to proper right ear. H 11 1/2".
