Glazed Redware Lidded Tobacco Jar, American, probably Baraboo, WI, second half 19th century, octagonal, paneled jar with footed base and original domed lid with paneling and pointed finial, the surfaces of each decorated with mottled manganese and covered in a clear lead glaze. Produced in the style of Rockingham ware, this redware jar is closely related to an important, similarly glazed and molded tobacco jar positively attributable to the pottery of Philip Pointon in Baraboo, Wisconsin, donated in 1906 to the Sauk County Historical Society by one of Pointon's daughters. Literature: Henry Hecker and Peter Maas, "History of Baraboo Pottery," MadeFromClay.org. Jar with a few shallow chips to interior of rim, a 1 3/4" line from rim, and minor wear. Lid with reattached finial and crack extending from rim to finial, as well as minor chips to flange on the underside. H (including lid) 9".
