Rare Glazed Redware Spittoon, Inscribed "S. Bell," Solomon Bell, Strasburg, VA, circa 1870, molded form with octagonal, scalloped sides, semi-circular opening at shoulder, and recessed opening in top; lead-glazed surface decorated with mottled cream-colored slip and heavy manganese sponging over an orange clay ground. Underside incised "S. Bell" for Solomon Bell. A colorful example of rare, script-signed pottery from the Bells' Strasburg shop. A 1" chip to foot. Scratches and a few lesser chips to underside. A top-to-bottom crack on one side extending to hole on top, which includes a chip and minor flake along crack. H 5"; Diam. 8 1/2".
