Exceedingly Rare and Important Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Brushed Cobalt and Incised Floral Decorations, attributed to Solomon Bell, Winchester or Strasburg, VA, circa 1840, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and arched lug handles, decorated on one side with a large brushed design of a blossoming tulip plant. Reverse decorated with a large incised design of a flowering plant bearing three-petaled blossoms and leaves accented with dashed interiors. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Shoulder impressed with one of Solomon Bell's known four-gallon capacity marks. This recently surfaced jar is significant in its use of incised decoration, as it is the only example of stoneware by any member of the Bell family that we have seen featuring this highly desirable decorative treatment. Numerous sealed cracks throughout. A firing crack to underside and additional firing cracks to base. Rim chips. One base base. H 14 1/2".
