Exceptional Copper-Decorated Redware Jar with Domed Lid, NY State origin, early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, tall collar, and rounded lug handles with circular depression at the terminals, the surface dramatically-decorated with brushed copper slashes over a mottled reddish ground with tannish streaks and accents throughout, all under a clear lead glaze. Interior covered in a tan-to-gold lead-based glaze. Includes original domed lid with tooled edge, rounded finial, and matching glaze scheme. A true masterwork of Northeastern U.S. redware and among the most brilliantly-glazed examples from this region that we have seen, remarkably retaining its original cover. Provenance: Recently surfaced in North Carolina. Very nice condition. A 1 1/2" flake to one handle. Some additional minor to light wear to terminals of handles. Rim with light wear and a minor chip. Glazed surface of jar survives in immaculate condition with only two minor in-the-firing flaws: a small ping to the collar and a small in-the-firing contact mark below one handle. Lid with heavy chipping to flange on underside, a few edge chips, light wear to finial, a 1/2" flake to top of edge, a minor flake to top of edge, and an in-the-firing contact mark above edge. Glazed surface of lid survives in generally excellent condition. H (excluding lid) 7 3/8" ; H (including lid) 9 1/4".
