Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "M. & T. MILLER / NEWPORT, PA," circa 1870, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a horizontal stem bearing three large tulips. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. The two six-gallon Miller jars in this auction are the first of this capacity that we have offered. A faint 4" surface line descending from shoulder on reverse, not visible on interior. A 1" flake to interior of rim. A 5/8" rim chip on reverse. Other small rim chips. An in-the-firing salt drip to front. In-the-firing contact marks to surface, including a small surface chip to reverse. A thin, 1 3/8" in-the-firing flake at bottom edge on reverse. Tight lines to underside. H 14 3/8".
