Scarce and Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Nashville, TN Advertising and Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, attributed to Enoch Fowler, Beaver, PA, circa 1870, semi-ovoid churn with applied lug handles, tooling to midsection and shoulder, and semi-rounded rim, featuring the stenciled advertising, "FROM / SPIRE & DUFF / NASHVILLE, TENN.," including a series of stars, applied over a slip-coated surface. Freehand stripe decoration below rim, to midsection, and at base. (This vessel was measured with liquid to determine the gallon size and holds around 4.5 gallons.) A well-decorated and nicely-colored example of Western Pennsylvania stoneware made for the Tennessee market. A 6 1/4" Y-shaped surface line and 4" vertical surface line on reverse, not visible on interior. A minor rim nick on reverse. A 2" glaze line to proper right side of jar's front, not visible on interior. Some minor surface wear and typical in-the-firing flaws, including some fry to heavier areas of cobalt application.
