Rare Stoneware Flowerpot with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Western PA, WV, or OH origin, third quarter 19th century, wide-mouthed, ovoid form with heavily-beaded rim and elaborately-turned pedestal base, brush-decorated with a tulip emanating from a sweeping stem, flanked by graduated swags. Decoration appears to be applied over a slip-coated surface. Original wide drain hole on interior where pot meets pedestal base, formed while the vessel was on the wheel. The decoration on this work is related to pieces made by John Greenland in Connellsville, Pennsylvania and earlier Thompson family stoneware products of Morgantown, West Virginia, among other regional makers. Exceptional form. Large, circular in-the-firing contact mark on underside, including a 2" in-the-firing flake to bottom edge of base. Minor to small rim chips. H 6 3/8" ; Diam. 6 1/2".
