Rare and Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "JAS. HAMILTON / & CO. / GREENSBORO . PA.," circa 1875, semi-ovoid pitcher with tall, flaring collar and heavily-tooled rim, the body featuring James Hamilton maker's stenciling above a stenciled "2" flanked by graduated vertical dashes. Freehand stripes above and below. Collar profusely-decorated throughout with graduated swags and spots. Excellent size, form, and decoration. Three large rim chips and a smaller in-the-firing rim chip. Spout chips. A 3" hairline from rim on reverse. An in-the-firing fissure to upper and lower handle. A salt drip to proper right side of pitcher. A 2" partially glazed-over in-the-firing fissure from rim on interior, 3/8" of which is visible at the rim on the exterior. H 12 3/4".
