Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Floral and Berry Motif, OH origin, circa 1830, ovoid jug with footed base, heavily-tooled spout, and ribbed handle, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a flowering plant with sinuous stem and tulip-shaped blossom, bearing hanging clusters of berries to the left and right. Incised "4" above. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This well-decorated jug was likely made by a Northeastern-trained potter who moved west. Provenance: Hyde Park Country Auctions, Poughkeepsie, NY. A restored vertical crack on underside, extending up front where it forms a large Y continuing onto left and right sides of jug. The restoration extends through the base area of the stem, through the tip of the lower leaf on the proper right side and the nearby cluster of berries. Three in-the-firing chips to underside, the largest of which is glazed over and measures 1 3/8". H 17".
