Outstanding Ten-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Freehand and Sponged Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "D.G. THOMPSON / Morgantown," David Greenland Thompson, Morgantown, WV, circa 1865, semi-ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and extruded handles, decorated with hanging floral spray surrounded by a sponged-cobalt border, flanked by four sponged medallions with smaller floral designs within. Shoulder decorated with floral motifs between two bands of cobalt sponging. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Reverse impressed with rare "D.G. THOMPSON / Morgantown" maker's mark, flanking his pottery's distinctive ten-gallon capacity mark. Featuring an exceptional size and extremely rare oval and circular design elements, this jar is the finest piece of signed D. G. Thompson stoneware that we have ever offered. Provenance: Crocker Farm, Inc., August 21, 2020, lot 173. A thin, inverted T-shaped crack on reverse, extending from rim to base. An approximately 11" diagonal Y-shaped surface line on left side/front of jar, not visible on interior. A small handle chip. Two tiny, glazed-over chips to interior of rim. Some in-the-firing kiln furniture marks to top of rim. H 19 1/2".
