Exceptional Salt-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Applied Decoration, attributed to the Hedgecough Pottery, Putnam County, TN, late 19th or early 20th century, ovoid jar with crimped rim and two vertical, open handles applied at the shoulder, decorated on the front with applied heart, diamond, and scrolled drape designs, all embellished with depressed treatment throughout. Surface dipped in a reddish-brown slip and covered in a salt glaze. One of a small group of documented jars decorated in this manner, this work ranks among the finest examples of brown-dipped Middle Tennessee stoneware known. Losses to rim. A reglued break to midsection of one handle. Otherwise excellent condition. H 13 1/2".
