Extremely Rare Copper-Glazed Redware Sugar Bowl, attributed to Christopher Alexander Haun, Greene County, TN, circa 1840-1860, ovoid form with footed base, tall collar, and ribbed vertical handles applied at the shoulder, the interior with recessed rim to hold a lid. Impressed with two asterisk stamps on the front and reverse. Surface covered in a mottled green lead-and-copper glaze. Christopher Alexander Haun (1821-1861) was a Union sympathizer during the Civil War who, on November 8, 1861, participated in the burning of a Confederate railroad bridge along Lick Creek in Greene County, Tennessee. Convicted of treason and hanged by the Confederacy, Haun left behind a moving letter to his wife, Elizabeth, instructing her to have fellow potters "fishing off [his] ware ... for [her] support." Haun is regarded today as Tennessee's most gifted potter and revered as a man of principle who died for the Union cause; more about this remarkable figure in the history of American ceramics is available in our description for Lot 29. One handle broken into two pieces and reglued. Other handle cracked. Surface flakes. A small piece of adhered clay to one side. Two flattened, unglazed areas to rim. A small in-the-firing chip to top of rim and a few minor chips to interior of rim. Three large in-the-firing contact marks to underside. H 4".
