Rare Copper-Glazed Redware Jar, attributed to J.A. Lowe or possibly Jackson Campbell, Greene County, TN, mid 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled rim, and flattened rim, the shoulder decorated with abstract relief designs including a crosshatched pattern, star within a diamond, stylized flower blossom, and plant with "ram's horn" stems. Surface covered in a mottled green lead-and-copper glaze. In her notes, Wahler states the following about this jar: "Have viewed some of the state sherds since this exhibit. S & R collected sherds on Jackson Campbell's property. One rim sherd is very similar to this cream pot. . . We still do not know of another 'rams horn' design such as is found in this coggle." Exhibited: Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Museum of East Tennessee History, May 16-October 30, 2011. Excellent condition. A 5/8"area of in-the-making flaws to interior of rim. A faint 3" line from rim on interior, partially visible on exterior. A minor in-the-firing ping to exterior of rim. Expected minor rim wear. H 5 5/8".
