Rare Salt-Glazed Stoneware Pedestal or Bird Bath with Applied American Flag Decoration, Southern or Midwestern U.S. origin, fourth quarter 19th century, with flaring, stepped base culminating in a wide, shallow dish, the midsection decorated with hand-modeled and applied crossed American flags with incised stars and stripes. Crimping to base and shoulder and applied clay around exterior of dish. Likely used outdoors as a stand for an urn or possibly a small bird bath. Exceptional form with highly unusual patriotic decoration. A restored 2 3/4" x 3/4" loss to rim. A few additional rim chips and small losses to applied clay around exterior of dish. H 8 3/4 ; W (across top) 8 3/4".
