Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Presentation Jar with Brown Slip Decoration, attributed to Isaac Warnack, Upper Alton, IL, circa 1840, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and tall collar with flattened rim, brush-decorated in reddish-brown slip on one side with a two-stemmed flowering plant and faintly-incised inscription and on the reverse with a brushed stylized tree or leaf along with a distinctive two-gallon capacity mark. Large reddish-brown slip band to collar and rim. Made at the Upper Alton, Illinois pottery of the Knoxville-trained potter, Isaac Warnack. In her notes, Wahler states, "This [is the] best decorated such jar that I have found." Excellent condition with a small rim chip on reverse, a minor nick to shoulder molding below, and some wear to proper right handle. H 9 7/8".
