Large-Sized Stoneware Pitcher with Coggled Decoration, NJ or NY State origin, early 19th century, ovoid pitcher with footed base, tooled shoulder, and flaring collar with semi-rounded rim, decorated with coggled diamond-and-figure-eight motifs to the collar and shoulder, brushed over in cobalt. Additional cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Pitchers of this type have been attributed to New Jersey potters, such as Thomas Warne and/or Joshua Letts of South Amboy and the Bissett family of Old Bridge, as well as the Paul Cushman pottery of Albany, New York. A crack across underside, extending partway up body in two places. A thin 6 3/4" inverted Y-shaped crack from rim on reverse, including a small surface chip. A 9 3/4" inverted Y-shaped crack from rim. Spout chips. A chip to interior of rim. A 1 1/4" crack to top of rim including a small flake. A thin inverted Y-shaped crack descending approximately 2" from rim on reverse. An in-the-firing iron ping to front and an in-the-firing chip to shoulder on reverse. A narrow 1 1/4" in-the-firing flake to foot. Minor traces of old green paint to rim. H 15 1/2".
