Very Rare Large-Sized Stoneware Vase with Cobalt Decoration, Northeastern U.S. origin, mid 19th century, ovoid form with tall, flaring collar, semi-squared rim, and ribbed strap handles with upturned lower terminals, decorated at the rim, shoulder, and midsection with incised bands of straight and wavy lines. Brushed stylized foliate and circular floral motifs around waist, cobalt highlights to banding, spots along handles, and highlights to the handle terminals. Exceptional form and size. Albany-slip-glazed interior. Provenance: A Bicentennial Special Auction, Folk Art Antiques personally selected by Walter Himmelreich, Pennypacker Auction Centre, Reading, PA, Monday June 7, 1976; ex-James and Nancy Glazer; Purchased by Wahler at The Pennsylvania German Collection of Edward & Audrey Kornowski, Pook & Pook, Inc., Downingtown, PA, September 28, 1996, lot 69. Excellent condition with a small filled rim chip, two small chips to interior of rim, chips to lower handle terminals, and a thin 2" crack from rim. H 14".
