Unusual Manganese-Decorated Redware Jar, American, possibly Western PA or NC origin, mid 19th century, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and two applied strap handles at the shoulder, the lead-glazed exterior decorated throughout with splashed manganese over a reddish ground, the interior coated in a clear lead glaze over an orange ground. The provenance of the jar suggests it was possibly made in the Western Pennsylvania area, although an attribution to Davidson County, North Carolina has also been suggested. Provenance: Crayon inscription on the underside reads, "Bought in / Mapletown / Likely / Early / Greensboro," indicating it was found in Western Pennsylvania. Chips and wear to rim and interior of rim. One handle broken and reglued. Wear to surface. Heavy chipping to base. H 9 3/4".
