Exceptional Small-Sized Stoneware Presentation Jug with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Inscribed "Joseph Kernouse," attributed to George and Albert Black, Somerfield, PA, circa 1865, ovoid jug with tooled spout, brush-decorated with two flowering plants bearing the Blacks distinctive hoof-shaped blossoms. Base inscribed "Joseph Kernouse" in freehand cobalt. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Arguably the finest example of Black stoneware to come to auction in a decade or more, this work is noteworthy for its extremely rare form and size, strong decoration, and highly unusual presentation inscription. Attesting to the rarity of the form alone, this lot is the first jug attributable to the Black family that we have ever offered. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 5".
