Extremely Rare Glazed Redware Jar, TN origin, possibly Knox County, circa 1820-1860, ovoid jar with tall collar and semi-rounded rim, fitted with a ribbed, vertical-strap handle on one side and a ribbed horizontal-strap handle on the opposing side. Surface covered in a dark-brown lead-and-manganese glaze. Exhibited: Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Museum of East Tennessee History, May 16-October 30, 2011. Literature: Illustrated in Wahler, Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Part One, p. 106, fig. 112, p. 210, fig. 112. In this book, Wahler describes this jar as the "only known East Tennessee pot with this handle configuration" (Wahler, p. 210). Provenance: Purchased from Hope Estate, Knoxville, TN. Chipping and heavy wear to rim and vertical handle. Professional restoration to a large portion of horizontal handle. Chipping around base. H 10 1/4".
