Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt and Manganese Decoration, Stenciled "RICE & BROYLES / ? / POTTERY / SUNNYSIDE, WV," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with rounded rim, featuring the Rice & Broyles maker's stenciling in reddish-brown manganese, flanked by brushed cobalt swag. A 2 1/2" hairline from rim. Two small chips to interior of rim. Various in-the-firing flaws, including salt residue to rim, a few in-the-firing surface cracks at base on reverse, which are glazed over and not visible on interior, a small in-the-firing chip to underside at edge, an in-the-firing flake to underside, a small X-shaped surface line to underside, and in-the-firing residue to underside. H 9 5/8".
