Rare and Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "D.G. THOMPSON / Morgantown," WV origin, circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and extruded lug handles, brush-decorated with sweeping floral motifs to shoulder and base and a scalloped line to midsection, all interspersed with freehand stripes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Reverse impressed David Greenland Thompson maker's mark flanking an impressed three-gallon capacity mark. Provenance: Wahler states the following about this jar: "This must be the pot I bought at one of Harold Guillilands(sic) armory shows. I think I had one similar and people brought one in to sell me." Small rim chips. Small chips to shoulder molding on reverse. A chip to proper left handle. A small in-the-firing lime ping below rim on front. H 13".
