Glazed Redware Jug, probably Henkel-Spigle Pottery, Amsterdam, Botetourt County, VA, possibly Cain Pottery, Sullivan County, TN, circa 1830-1880, early to mid 19th century, small-sized, ovoid jug with distinctive spout molding, the shoulder decorated with combed wavy incising between two bands of combed horizontal incising. Surface coated in a reddish-brown, lead-based glaze colored with manganese or iron. Exhibited: Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Museum of East Tennessee History, May 16-October 30, 2011. Marcus King found this jug in the Fincastle area of Virginia. One base chip. Wear to spout and handle. Surface with in-the-firing glaze crawling and wear. H 6 1/4".
