Glazed Redware Jug, probably Henkel-Spigle Pottery, Amsterdam, Botetourt County, VA, possibly Cain Pottery, Sullivan County, TN, circa 1830-1880, early to mid 19th century, small-sized, ovoid jug with distinctive spout molding, the shoulder decorated with combed wavy incising between two bands of combed horizontal incising. Surface coated in a reddish-brown, lead-based glaze colored with manganese or iron. Exhibited: Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Museum of East Tennessee History, May 16-October 30, 2011. Literature: Illustrated in Wahler, Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Part One, p. 129, fig. 133, p. 214, fig. 133. Marcus King found this jug in the Fincastle area of Virginia. One base chip. Wear to spout and handle. Surface with in-the-firing glaze crawling and wear. H 6 1/4".
