Very Rare Great Road Copper-and-Manganese-Decorated Redware Jar, Smyth County, VA origin, mid 19th century, vasiform jar with footed base, incised banding to shoulder, flared rim, and large open-loop handles with depressed terminals, decorated with alternating vertical streaks of copper and manganese under a clear lead glaze. Distinctively-colored, this jar is one of a small group attributed to this specific county in Southwestern Virginia. Exhibited: Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Museum of East Tennessee History, May 16-October 30, 2011. Provenance: Originally found in Carter County, TN. Purchased by Wahler from Marcus King in 2010. One handle with full professional restoration. Some scattered exfoliation to body. Wear to handle terminals. Rim with a few minor chips, expected wear, and a 3/4" hairline. Flakes to interior. H 11 1/2".
