Salt-Glazed Stoneware Pitcher, attributed to John Wesley Carpenter, Carroll County, VA, fourth quarter 19th century, ovoid pitcher with heavily-tooled, flaring collar, and incised scalloping to midsection, the surface dipped in kaolin slip and covered in a salt glaze. Literature: For related examples, see Compton, "John Wesley Carpenter: Tradition, Innovation, and Adaptation in a Shattered Post-Civil War South," Ceramics in America 2023. A 3" hairline on underside, extending 5" up proper right side of pitcher. A minor 1 3/4" hairline on underside. Wear to base, midsection, and rim. Minor rim chips. Handle with a 3/4" stone ping and small flake. H 10 1/4".
