Very Rare Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Rockingham County, VA origin, attributed to Andrew Coffman at the John Zigler Pottery, Timberville, VA, circa 1835, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, tall collar, and vertical strap handles with doubly-depressed terminals, decorated on the front and reverse with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a tulip plant bearing two conjoined, flowering stems. One side includes scrolled leaves at the base of the plant and a flourish between the stems. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Exceptional vertical-handled form atypical of the region. Provenance: Purchased by Wahler from Garth's Auction, Delaware, OH in 1983. A 1 1/4" flake to one handle. A firing crack to upper terminal of one handle. An approximately 11" diagonal crack from rim. A thin 1 3/4" crack from rim. A few rim chips. Base slightly misshapen with felt added to help the jar sit flat. H 11".
