Glazed Redware Pitcher, attributed to the Cain Pottery, Sullivan County, TN, circa 1850-1880, ovoid pitcher with flared collar and heavily-ribbed handle, the midsection accented with an incised wavy line below above three straight incised lines. Surface covered in an iron-flecked lead glaze, possibly tinted with manganese. Exhibited: Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Museum of East Tennessee History, May 16-October 30, 2011. Literature: Illustrated in Wahler, Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Part One, p. 131, fig. 138, p. 215, fig. 138. Provenance: Found in a Sullivan County, TN antiques shop in the 1970s. A small rim chip and minor rim wear. Some wear and/or in-the-firing glaze spalling to handle. Some diagonal in-the-firing fissures to base area. Two short in-the-firing fissures to base of handle. H 9 3/4".
