Exceptional Glazed Redware Jar with Lid, attributed to Emanuel Suter, New Erection Pottery, near Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, VA, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tapered shoulder and semi-rounded rim, the surface coated in a heavy lead-and-manganese-glaze featuring mottled shades of brown over a light clay ground. Includes original, stepped redware lid with flattened finial and matching glaze. Among the most beautiful redware pieces from this pottery that we have seen with a glaze reminiscent of the work of 18th century English potter, Thomas Whieldon. Literature: For related pieces, see Evans and Suter, A Great Deal of Stone and Earthen Ware, p. 87. Provenance: Originally found in Roanoke, VA. Purchased by Wahler from Marcus King in the 1970s or 1980s. Losses around inner rim for lid. Otherwise excellent condition with as-made craquelure to glaze. Lid in excellent condition with a small chip to underside along edge. H (including lid) 8 1/4".
