An estimate is an expected selling price for an item at auction. The price ranges for each lot are considered conservative in value, and are listed as a courtesy to our bidders to give them an idea of how much they may be expected to pay to win the item. It is entirely possible for an item to sell for less or more than the given estimate.
×Rare Small-Sized Redware Jar with Manganese Seaweed Decoration, attributed to Solomon Bell, Strasburg, VA, circa 1875, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and flattened, semi-squared rim, the surface dipped in whitish slip and decorated with large manganese seaweed designs in the style of English mochaware. This desirable decorative treatment is primarily found on Bell's flowerpots and this lot is the first jar by this maker that we have seen using this technique. An approximately 2 3/4" vertical line from rim and an approximately 2 1/2" diagonal line from rim. Wear to rim and interior. Some surface wear to exterior. H 4 7/8".
