Rare Small-Sized Redware Jar with Manganese Seaweed Decoration, attributed to Solomon Bell, Strasburg, VA, circa 1875, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and flattened, semi-squared rim, the surface dipped in whitish slip and decorated with large manganese seaweed designs in the style of English mochaware. This desirable decorative treatment is primarily found on Bell's flowerpots and this lot is the first jar by this maker that we have seen using this technique. An approximately 2 3/4" vertical line from rim and an approximately 2 1/2" diagonal line from rim. Wear to rim and interior. Some surface wear to exterior. H 4 7/8".
