Extremely Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Two-Color-Slip Floral Decoration, possibly AR, fourth quarter 19th century, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and flaring semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated at the shoulder with a flower in highly unusual copper and cobalt slip, beside a cobalt-script 5. Brown-glazed interior. Includes original lid coated in a light-brown glaze. Literature: Illustrated in Greer, American Stonewares, p. 35. Provenance: Originally found in Arkansas; The Georgeanna H. Greer Collection of Important American Stoneware, Harmer Rooke Galleries, New York, NY, November 18th 1992, lot 223. Spider line to underside, extending onto base, not visible on interior. A 4" x 4" X-shaped line near base on side of churn, not visible on interior. Two other minor surface lines, not visible on interior. Some light exfoliation to interior base area. A chip to interior of rim. A chip to shoulder. A 1 1/2" line from rim, not visible on interior. A small in-the-firing ping to reverse. Surface staining. Lid with some chips and edge wear. H 17".
