Exceptional Open-Handled Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Impressed Decoration, AL origin, second half 19th century, ovoid jar with flared rim and two applied strap handles descending from the rim to the shoulder, decorated around the upper half with impressed crosshatched ovals, horizontal curvilinear designs, and dashed S-shaped motifs. A single impressed crosshatched oval appears at the top of each handle. Surface covered in a mottled light-green alkaline glaze. Among the finest Alabama stoneware jars to come to market in recent years, combining form with extravagant regional stamped decoration. Provenance: Purchased by Wahler from Don Walters Art & Antiques, Goshen, IN, on September 20, 1989. Horizontal hairlines around base. A small chip to underside at edge. Two horizontal cracks to one handle. Two hairlines to other handle. Rim with wear and a few chips. Wear to inner rim for lid. H 9 1/4".
