Outstanding Alkaline-Glazed Lidded Stoneware Jar with Impressed Leaf Decoration, AL origin, mid to late 19th century, squat-shaped, highly-ovoid jar with footed base, tooled rim, and two applied open handles at the shoulder, decorated on the front and reverse with impressed opposing pairs of leaves above straight and wavy incised lines and a series of hanging impressed leaves. Includes original domed lid with dentile coggling and knob embellished with depressed crimping to form a stylized flower blossom. Surface of each covered in a mottled green alkaline glaze. Exceptional form and appealing mix of incised and impressed treatments characteristic of the region. Jar in excellent condition with a 3/4" base chip, a minor, in-the-firing base chip, a minor chip to interior of rim, and a tiny nick to interior of rim. Chips to lid. H (including lid) 9 3/4".
