Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, attributed to Mossy Creek, GA, possibly Hezekiah Chandler, circa 1830, ovoid jar with tall collar, semi-rounded rim, and flattened lug handles, the surface covered in dark-olive alkaline glaze. Impressed "2" below one handle. Attribution provided by John Burrison in 1998. Literature: For information on Chandler, see Burrison, Brothers in Clay, p. 246. According to Burrison the earliest dated piece of Mossy Creek pottery is attributed to Chandler's son, Clemmonds Quillian Chandler, and bears the inscription, "S P d / 1843." Heavy chipping to rim. A few short, thin cracks from rim. A sealed Y-shaped crack in underside, adjoining a series of sealed cracks extending partway up body of jar. H 11 3/4".
