Glazed Redware Jar, attributed to the Cain Pottery, Sullivan County, TN, circa 1850-1880, ovoid jar with footed base, semi-rounded rim, and partially-open loop handles, the shoulder decorated with a band of straight and wavy line incising. Surface covered in a streaky, mottled brown glaze with darker flecking throughout, likely composed of lead colored with iron or manganese. In her notes, Wahler states, "Marc [King] emailed that he had seen pots with this glaze which were found on Boozy Creek in Sullivan County right on VA line." Exhibited: Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Museum of East Tennessee History, May 16-October 30, 2011. Provenance: Descended in the Black family of Blountville, TN; Purchased by Wahler at Case Antiques, Inc. Auctions and Appraisals, Knoxville, TN, April 19, 2008, lot 69. Sealed cracks extending from underside partway up body of jar. Wear to surface and rim. Wear to handles, including a 1" filled chip to one handle. Chipping to base. A few in-the-firing flaws to surface. H 13 3/4".
