Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Stamped "J.S PENLAND," Buncombe County, NC, late 19th century, ovoid jar with slightly-flared, semi-squared rim and arched lug handles, the surface coated in a mottled, olive-brown alkaline glaze. Impressed under one handle with the maker's mark of Joseph Sylvester Penland. Provenance: Purchased by Wahler in 2005 at Brunk Auctions, Asheville, NC. Excellent condition with a few minor rim chips. H 12 1/2".
