Outstanding Fifteen-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Stamped "D S," Daniel Seagle, Vale, NC, circa 1840, rotund jar with flattened rim and four arched pocket handles applied at the shoulder, the surface covered in a flowing olive-green alkaline glaze with darker runs cascading from the upper body to the base. Impressed "D S" on one handle and "15" on another. Daniel Seagle is praised as one of the South's most-skilled 19th century stoneware potters, with an extraordinary level of refinement to his ovoid forms. His masterfully-thrown four-handled jars are among the most iconic pottery pieces known from the state of North Carolina, regarded as the zenith of his illustrious production. Literature: Illustrated in Rubin, Southern Folk Art, p. 24. A 4 1/2" loss to rim. Four other rim chips, measuring 3 1/4", 2 1/2", 2", and 1 1/2". A tight X-shaped crack across underside, ascending 4 1/2" up base in two places and 4" in two others places. In-the-firing clay residue to underside. Minor chipping to handles. H 20 1/2".
