Four-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Two-Toned Glaze, probably Whelchel Family, Gaffney, SC area, late 19th century, tapering churn with flared collar and applied lug handles, decorated with a dipped, light-colored alkaline glaze to the lower two-thirds and a reddish-brown slip to the upper third. Impressed "4" at shoulder. Heavy wear to rim and inner rim for lid as well as two rim chips. Wear to handles. Two in-the-firing pings to underside. A 2 1/4" hairline from rim on churn's proper right side. H 18 3/8".
