Rare Five-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Churn with Stenciled Brown-Slip Floral Decoration, attributed to the Whelchel Family, Gaffney, SC area, late 19th century, tapering churn with flared collar and flattened lug handles, decorated with a stenciled design of a flowering vine in two-toned brown slip against a cream-glazed ground. Upper body with dipped gray-green alkaline glaze. Incised "5" for five gallons at shoulder on reverse. Unusual use of various glaze/slip treatments resulting in four different colors on the same piece. A 1 1/2" rim chip and two other small rim chips. Chipping and wear to inner rim for lid. Several vertical lines to base, the longest measuring 3 1/2", which appear to be in the exterior surface only. Wear to interior base and surface lines to interior base, not visible on exterior. A few base chips. H 17 7/8".
