Fine Lidded Stoneware Jar with Alkaline Glaze and Brown Slip Floral Decoration, attributed to the Whelchel Family, Gaffney, SC area, late 19th century, ovoid jar with open strap handles and stepped, flaring rim, decorated with a stenciled brown-slip design of a flowering vine against a cream-colored, alkaline-glazed ground. Brown-glazed interior. Includes original lid with cream-colored glaze. Wahler's notes describe the jar as follows: "small Great Whelchel. This is a great jar. One of my 2 favorite Whelchel pots. . . One of our two best Whelchels." Jar in excellent, essentially as-made condition. Lid with a firing crack to underside, barely visible on top surface, as well as a few in-the-firing surface flakes, likely in-the-making. H (including lid) 10 1/2".
